About ABCCD

The Autism, Bilingualism, Cognitive and Communicative Development (ABCCD) research group at the University of Fribourg investigates how growing up with more than one language influences communication and cognitive development in autistic and non-autistic children.

As multilingualism becomes increasingly common, many families wonder whether growing up with more than one language may be challenging for autistic children. Through research involving children across multiple countries and languages, ABCCD explores how bilingualism relates to communication, executive functions, Theory of Mind, language development, and overall well-being.

Led by Professor Stephanie Durrleman, the ABCCD team aims to generate evidence-based knowledge that can support families, educators, clinicians, and communities in making informed decisions about multilingualism and child development.
